Five years later, following Lumumba’s reelection in 2021, the collapse of Jackson’s water system has brought urgency to that political project. His agenda brought the younger Lumumba celebrity within the progressive establishment, including high-profile speaking gigs and an award from Harvard University. It was a continuation of the program initiated by Lumumba’s father, also named Chokwe Lumumba, a Black nationalist organizer and attorney who was elected mayor of Jackson mayor in 2014 before dying of a heart attack eight months later. Lumumba promised to reverse the decline, and he swept into power with 93% of the vote in 2017 with pledges to bring down crime, improve education, and fix Jackson’s crumbling infrastructure through an expansive progressive agenda, framed in terms of racial justice. Mississippi has the highest poverty rate in the nation, and majority-Black Jackson has been in especially dire need since much of its wealthy white tax base fled to the suburbs following federally enforced integration in the 1960s. But the 39-year-old mayor might be in trouble. A longstanding animosityĪs a leader, Lumumba projects authority, calm, and easy confidence. He’s haunted by the suffering he’s seen: “The faces of the people who just don’t have water, the people who meet me in a grocery store or any place that I could be going publicly within the city,” he says. Lumumba was out and about during the water shut off, meeting volunteers and giving frequent press conferences to update citizens on the state of the water supply. But for some 150,000 residents of Mississippi’s largest city, the concerns were more immediate, too: no water to even flush toilets or fight fires. Reeves declared a state of emergency and the spotlight on Jackson’s water problems cast into stark relief a complicated interplay of race and government responsibility, of competing visions of both history and progress, versions of which can be found across the country-and that will linger long after the immediate problems are fixed. 29, the city’s water shut off completely after flooding on Mississippi’s Pearl River overwhelmed the critically short-staffed primary water-treatment plant. The city had already been under a boil-water notice for weeks due to water quality violations, a frequent occurrence in Mississippi’s capital, forcing restaurants and other businesses to close, and residents to rely on bottled water for bathing and brushing their teeth. It had been a devastating week for Jackson. “I want that played when I drop this,” he says, smiling and holding up the letter again. Later, he mentions the theme song that the NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, the football coach at Jackson State University, plays to fire up his team.

One of the three thin metal rods protruding from the leading face of the bomb depressed slightly against the wooden hull. HL Hunley pressed its torpedo snugly against the Housatonic’s side. Their cannons weren’t positioned to hit an object so close by and down below, so they attacked with small-arms fire. It took hours to reach the ship.Ī sailor on watch aboard the Housatonic spotted the sliver of dark metal hull exposed above the surface of the water and alerted others, but submarines were new technology and the men did not understand the deadly shape in the water. The Housatonic was just one of many Union ships that had been prowling the waters outside Charleston for months, and tonight, like every other night, the silence was punctuated by the sounds of Union artillery. On the deck of the USS Housatonic, sailors gazed out over a flat sea. To complete its mission the Hunley would need to approach its target closely, then use this spar to press the charge directly against the side of the enemy’s hull. The torpedoes of the time were simple stationary bombs, very different from the modern, independent devices that can propel themselves through the water from a great distance. A spar made of wood and metal was bolted to a pivot on the bottom corner of the boat’s leading edge, and at the far end of this spar was a copper cylinder the size of a keg: the boat’s torpedo. Its bow carried the source of its destructive power. The submarine had been there for months, practicing for its crucial mission and waiting patiently for flat seas. The HL Hunley was lying in wait to the east of Charleston Harbor, off the coast of South Carolina. The deadlights, with their thick, imperfect, handmade glass, were the only sign that there might be a crew within. The submarine was about 40 feet long, cylindrical down most of its slim length, but with a tapered, wedge-shaped bow and stern that hinted at how quickly it could slice through the water. Pale moonlight glinted off the quiet ocean as small waves lapped against the hull. The dark hull of the submarine rose a few inches above the waterline. The Avast password generator instantly renders long and cryptographically secure characters. No matter how clever you think you are, the chances are that a hacker guessing billions of random passwords will crack it. Why? Because humans have predictable patterns when typing on a keyboard. Unfortunately, human-generated passwords are always weak. If you want a strong password, you need to create random passwords using cryptographic entropy. Instead, your device generates the local mathematical entropy to complete the password generate process. Our password creator generates a combination of keys to help you maximize safety and security while logging into different accounts. How It Works, which are derived from the French lilac. Like all medicines, however, Metformin can produce some side effects, some of which it is important to know. Weight neutral means that it is not associated with weight gain (or loss) as are many other diabetes medications. Metformin is a weight neutral medication that helps the body use insulin. The problem is that they are either not making enough insulin or the insulin they do make isn't being used efficiently. If your doctor has prescribed Metformin for diabetes or another use, what exactly is this medication and how does it work? What is the best way to take it to reduce side effects? What adverse effects might you experience and why is it important to be aware of these? Overview According to the American Diabetes Association Standards of Care, Metformin, if tolerated, is the preferred initial oral diabetes medication for Type 2 diabetes because it is the most effective. Is Metformin An Effective Treatment For Type 2 Diabetes? In addition to various websites, she has been published i She has been writing for several years with a focus on criminal justice and legal topics. Yvonne Van Damme is a freelance writer based in Seattle. If copious amounts of alcohol are consumed while taking metformin, the risk of developing lactic acidosis increases. It does not need to be eliminated completely, but it should not be consumed in large amounts. It’s a rare but possibly deadly condition. Dehydration contributes to the possibility of experiencing lactic acidosis. In addition, one rare side effect of metformin is lactic acidosis. Dehydration can contribute to diarrhea, as well as nausea. At a minimum, consume eight glasses of water per day. The side effects are often reduced with the extended-release version because small amounts of the medication are released throughout the day rather than all at once. Consult with your doctor about changing to the extended-release version of metformin if you are not already taking it. For best results, take it in the evening after a meal. If it’s taken on an empty stomach, nausea and vomiting are likely to occur. Thus, taking it daily will allow your body to get used to the medication. Side effects usually lessen the longer that it’s taken. Instructions Take metformin every single day and at the same time. One out of three patients will experience side effects. It can have problematic side effects, including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and gas. Metformin controls blood-sugar levels and regulates hormones. In addition, it’s used to treat polycystic ovarian syndrome. Metformin is a medication prescribed to treat and prevent type 2 diabetes. How To Take Metformin To Minimize Side Effects Spreadsheets and databases commonly form four-dimensional (or higher) shapes. For example, virologists construct four-dimensional maps of DNA sequences, where each component of a three-dimensional DNA molecule has one of four possible attributes (A, T, G, or C). Robert Heinlein described a tesseract buildng in his 1940 short story “And He Built a Crooked House.” Madeleine L’Engle describes a tesseract as a shortcut between three-dimensional places in her 1962 book “A Wrinkle in Time.” The Marvel Cinematic Universe includes a glowing blue crystalline tesseract.īut, the concept of a tesseract and other higher dimensional objects has practical applications, too. Salvador Dali painted a hypercube in his 1954 Crucifixion. Tesseracts are popular in art and science fiction. Rotating such an object appears very different from what you get if rotate a three-dimensional object. Except, all of the vertices form right angles to one another. But, you can consider a tesseract what you get if you have a cube-within-a-cube. It isn’t possible to represent a four-dimensional object in three-dimensional space, much less on a two-dimensional screen. While a cube has six square faces, a tesseract consists of eight cells. (Jason Hise)Ī tesseract or hypercube is the four-dimensional equivalent to a cube, much like a cube is a three-dimensional equivalent to a square. This animated GIF is a two-dimensional representation of a four-dimensional tesseract or hypercube. The International Center of Photography at 250 Bowery. “We wanted to find a world-class institution, but also an organization that would be accessible to the community, from practicing artists and schoolchildren and their families,” Paul Pariser, the co-chief executive of Taconic Investment Partners, one of three building partners on the complex, said in a statement. The museum had unveiled designs for a 10,000-square-foot facility that they hoped would entice viewers to make the journey to Pennsylvania, but pulled out of the development in 2015. Courtesy of Moso Studio.Įssex Crossing had been in search of a cultural anchor after Pittsburgh’s Andy Warhol Museum abandoned plans to open a New York outpost on the site. However, attendance has increased with each show, and the demographics are younger and more diverse than at the previous location, according to Lubell.Ī rendering of Essex Crossing, future home of the International Center of Photography. “We had been looking at many different options,” ICP executive director Mark Lubell told artnet News. “There wasn’t the intention that we were going to be moving out as soon as this.” Relocating, after all, comes at a high price: Traffic was down from 160,000 to 100,000 in the first year after the move, which was in line with projections as audience adjusted to the change. It considered securing an additional space at 250 Bowery or other nearby locations for the school, or relocating again, to Essex Crossing-a move first hinted at in January 2016, months before ICP even announced the Bowery’s opening date, when Essex Crossing developers Delancey Street Associates mentioned the museum as a tenant at a public meeting. Though the news may seem surprising so soon after the institution’s most recent relocation, the ICP was in something of a bind. It had been forced to move in January 2015 after its rent-free lease expired in Midtown, in a building owned by the Durst Organization. This time, the museum is heading to Essex Crossing, a new $1.5 billion mixed-use complex on the Lower East Side designed by SHoP Architects. The move will reunite the museum with its school, which remained in Midtown following the ICP’s 2016 move. Just over a year after inaugurating a new flagship at 250 Bowery, New York’s International Center of Photography (ICP) has announced plans to move yet again. And if that’s not adequate, advanced search and filtering options can help you find files by either their filename or parts of a filename.Īnother useful feature: you can save the results of a particular scan.
